Long Read Verse: Luke 5:1-11 NLT
One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee,[a] great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon,[b] its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.
8 When Simon Peter realised what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed.
Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.
Title: Borrowed By God
Focus Verse: Luke 5:3 NLT Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.
After a night of fishing with a failed attempt to catch any, Peter and his friends were on the shore cleaning their nets. Jesus saw Peter’s boat and borrowed it from him so that the people following Him could hear Him better.
God does not really need anything from us. He can do exactly what He needs to do without our participation. However, because He is relational and wants us to take part in His salvation plan for humanity, He invites us to partner with Him. He sometimes asks us to let Him use our possessions for the advancement of His kingdom.
The boat that did not serve them well the night before was willingly lent by Peter to Jesus. Now, it serves a greater purpose. It was used to draw men to God, as the Lord spoke of life and salvation to those who heard Him speak from the boat.
The boat was a valued possession for fishermen during that time, and Peter did not think twice about letting the Lord use it. Because of his willingness, the message of grace was preached to the people.
We may not have a boat, but we have possessions that God might be asking to “borrow” in order to further His kingdom on earth. It could be our time, our energy, talents, resources, etc.
What is God asking from you in order to partner with Him? What is keeping you from giving it?
Prayer: Lord, please reveal to me if there is anything that I am withholding from You. Help me to be a willing partner for the advancement of Your kingdom and the salvation of many.
