As we continue with our short devotional on Luke 5, we bring focus to verse 8 as we meditate on Peter’s encounter with Jesus, how it brought him to his knees, a sinful man, in front of a holy God, given the gift of a surrendered life that brings true freedom. Enjoy your time with the Lord today!
Title: Exposed by the Light
Focus Verse: Luke 5:8 NLT When Simon Peter realised what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.”
When Peter obeyed Jesus, he was half-hearted. Although he did obey, in his mind and heart, he was probably expecting nothing to happen. In front of a man he considered a Rabbi, and His followers, he might have done so just to avoid awkwardness. But he was surprised by the outcome!
Jesus knew very well what was going on inside Peter. Yet, He used that moment to teach him a valuable lesson. All Peter needed was to obey Him and follow His directions. It does not have to make sense. All He requires is faith, even if that faith is not yet fully developed.
Peter knew very well that he was a sinful man. He confessed it and was ashamed when he witnessed the powerful and miraculous work of God. The light of Jesus exposed this truth and brought him humility.
Many people are blinded by their sinfulness, especially because the world makes it look normal. However, once we have a real encounter with Jesus, we finally have our eyes opened. We then realise how filthy we are and how unworthy we are to be in the presence of God. But praise be to God because He does not reject us. He is actually seeking us in that state to cleanse us and commission us for the work He has created us for since the beginning.
If God searches your heart today, will He find anything that is hindering you from fully obeying Him? How can you share the hope you have about being sanctified?
Prayer: Dear God, thank You for shining Your light into my life and exposing how sinful I am. I praise You for the cleansing You provide through the precious blood of Jesus.
