Spiritual disciplines require faithfulness and perseverance, that we continue to go to the Word of God to be changed. Today, allow us to help you out by sharing the continuation of our Fishers of Men short devotional, this time bringing Luke 5:10 to emphasis. Let God’s precious Word move you forward from merely knowing to truly believing.
Title: A New Vocation
Focus Verse: Luke 5:10b NLT Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!”
God is unconventional. He acts in ways that most of us would not understand because He has a perfect view and knowledge of all things. His criteria for calling people are not the same as ours; He knows things that give Him a perfect standard. Thus, even when He saw doubt in Peter, it did not hinder His call for him to be a fisher of men.
Peter must have been shocked when Jesus invited him. That day, he likely felt like a failure as a fisherman, having caught no fish. He was then flooded with shame when he doubted Jesus. Why was Jesus asking him to do something so important?
Like Peter, we often doubt the call God gives us. We assess ourselves, our strengths, and our failures and wonder, “Did God really call me to do this?” We do not think we are qualified because we mistakenly believe that success depends on us, when in fact, it is all up to God.
God does not need perfect people. He wants humble, teachable, and willing individuals who will depend on Him every step of the way. Our greatest work is to do God’s will. When He employs us, we need not ask any questions—just trust that He will qualify us for the task at hand.
Has God ever called you to do something that you felt unqualified for? What helped you accept the call despite doubting your own abilities?
Prayer: Dear God, I am sorry for the times I said “no” to You because I felt I couldn’t do it. Please help me remember that I can do anything through Christ, as I am a mere instrument in Your powerful hands.
